the brief

Sustainable design for a private residence

We collaborated with architect Domenico Tripodi on Villa Senjak in Belgrade, a residence of approximately 700 m² with an indoor counter-current swimming pool.

The design incorporated energy efficiency measures, including an air-to-ground heat exchange system, and was developed to support a potential LEED for Homes certification.

An air-to-ground heat exchanger draws outdoor air through pipes laid in the ground, where temperatures stay relatively stable through the year. The air is pre-warmed in winter and pre-cooled in summer before it enters the house, easing the work of the heating and cooling systems.

An indoor pool adds its own demands for heat and humidity control, which makes efficient design all the more valuable. By shaping these choices early, we helped create a home where comfort and responsible energy use go together.

A short call is usually enough to tell whether the certification target and the engineering can be made to agree from the start. We can talk through where the constraints are likely to sit, what the rating realistically requires of the building, and how the two come together before any drawings are committed.
