More about the agenda
overview

A one-day preparation for the LEED v5 Green Associate exam, taught with the official USGBC curriculum by a USGBC Faculty Approved Instructor. The day follows the exam's knowledge domains, from LEED process and integrative strategies to energy, materials and indoor environmental quality, with practice questions in each. You also get the practical side: the exam references, registration and scheduling, and a study plan for the weeks before your exam.

prerequisites
None. The exam has no eligibility requirements, and the course assumes no prior LEED experience.
Architects & design leads
Leading building design, looking for sustainability goals that strengthen the concept instead of limiting it.
MEP & building-services engineers
Those who design heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems and need to know what certifications require of them.
Sustainability & ESG consultants
Guiding clients through certifications and reporting, aiming to deepen their command of the frameworks.
Developers & project managers
Running building projects and needing to understand what certification asks in time, cost and decisions.
Product manufacturers & suppliers
Those who make or sell building products and want them chosen for certified projects.
Students & early-career professionals
Starting out in engineering, architecture or sustainability, building a foundation in green building.
what you'll learn

By the end of the event, you'll know how to

outcome 1
Know what the exam asks
Describe the exam format, question types and knowledge domains, and know how to register, schedule and prepare for exam day.
outcome 2
Explain how LEED works
Explain rating-system selection, prerequisites and credits, impact areas, credit weighting, certification levels and the certification process.
outcome 3
Connect strategies to credits
Name the main strategies in each credit category and relate them to the prerequisites and credits that reward them.
outcome 4
Read a question the way the exam does
Tell recall, application and analysis questions apart, and apply an approach to each under time pressure.
outcome 5
Leave with a study plan
Have the four exam references, the official study aids, and a schedule for the weeks before the exam.

  • Recall, application and analysis questions
  • Knowledge domains and how many questions each carries
  • The four exam references
  • Registering, scheduling, and remote or test-centre delivery

Learning focus:
Know what the exam asks and how to prepare for exam day.

‍

Module 2: Green Building and the LEED Process

Duration: 60 minutes

  • The costs of conventional building practice
  • Rating systems as a shared framework
  • How LEED is developed and governed
  • The rating system family and rating system selection
  • Prerequisites, credits, credit categories and impact areas

  • The conventional process and the integrative process
  • Systems thinking, life-cycle thinking and iterative decisions
  • Integrative teams and early goal setting
  • The three LEED v5 assessments
  • Social equity, climate resilience and carbon in the project brief

Learning focus:
Understand why early, cross-disciplinary decisions shape every credit that follows.

‍

Module 4: Location, Transportation and Sustainable Sites

Duration: 60 minutes

  • Location efficiency and compact development
  • Previously developed sites, brownfields and sensitive land
  • Transit, cycling, walking and vehicle strategies
  • Site assessment and climate hazards
  • Heat island, rainwater management and light pollution
  • Habitat, bird safety and outdoor space

Learning focus:
Relate decisions about where and how a project sits on its land to the credits that reward them.

‍

Module 5: Water Efficiency

Duration: 30 minutes

  • Why water is an energy question too
  • The water end-use profile and the efficiency-first approach
  • Outdoor water and native or adapted planting
  • Indoor fixture flush and flow rates
  • Process water

Learning focus:
Identify where buildings use water and how demand is reduced before supply is considered.

‍

Module 6: Energy and Atmosphere

Duration: 60 minutes

  • Decarbonisation as the organising idea of LEED v5
  • Envelope, loads and right-sized systems
  • Electrification and renewable energy on and off site
  • Refrigerants and their climate impact

What other participants said

I came to the LEED and WELL course with some prior knowledge, but the training connected it all into a whole. Working with real data and scorecards on actual projects was especially valuable, and the practical use of each credit was clear on my very next project. The Energo team tailored the training to our needs and ran it professionally from start to finish.
