the brief

Managing systems design for a new departures building

In 1998 we provided project management for the mechanical and plumbing systems design of the new departures building at Otopeni Airport in Bucharest, now Henri Coandă International Airport.

The assignment was led by Ing. Danilo Franchi, working for Aerimpianti.

A departures building is one of the busiest parts of an airport. It must remain comfortable for large numbers of passengers while supporting security, check-in and many other functions, and its systems need to be dependable at all hours.

Managing the design process for such a building means keeping many specialists aligned and making sure decisions fit together. This project is part of our aviation portfolio, together with the Malpensa cargo hangar and La Porta di Milano.

A short call is usually enough to tell whether the certification target and the engineering can be made to agree from the start. We can talk through where the constraints are likely to sit, what the rating realistically requires of the building, and how the two come together before any drawings are committed.
