the brief

Systems design for an art space at Malpensa Airport

We designed the electromechanical systems for La Porta di Milano, an art and exhibition space at Malpensa Airport covering approximately 2,500 m². The project was carried out for Montagna Costruzioni.

The work included the planning and design of an indoor fog-screen installation, alongside the building services for the space.

La Porta di Milano supported the winning architectural proposal by Nicolin, Marinoni and Calzoni in the international competition organised by SEA, the company that manages Milan's airports.

An exhibition space inside an airport brings together two different worlds: the steady flow of travellers and the quieter attention that art invites. The systems had to serve both, and the fog screen added a technical challenge of its own, where air and moisture become part of the experience. It is a project where engineering and art meet in a very direct way.

A short call is usually enough to tell whether the certification target and the engineering can be made to agree from the start. We can talk through where the constraints are likely to sit, what the rating realistically requires of the building, and how the two come together before any drawings are committed.
