the brief

Building services and CFD for an ecclesiastical building

For the Curia di Milano, we carried out building services engineering and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for La Collegiata in Milan in 2004. The project concerned approximately 830 m².

MEP engineering covers the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that make a building usable and comfortable. CFD analysis adds a further layer of understanding: it simulates how air and heat move through a space, which is especially useful in tall, open interiors such as those of churches.

Working with both allows design choices to be tested before they are built, so that systems can be shaped around how a space actually behaves rather than how it is assumed to behave.

La Collegiata belongs to our portfolio of ecclesiastical buildings, which includes several projects for the Curia di Milano.

A short call is usually enough to tell whether the certification target and the engineering can be made to agree from the start. We can talk through where the constraints are likely to sit, what the rating realistically requires of the building, and how the two come together before any drawings are committed.
