the brief

Bringing WELL into a university campus from the tender stage

In 2021 we prepared tender documentation incorporating WELL requirements for Campus MIND, the University of Milan's new campus in the former Expo 2015 area near Rho and Pero.

The WELL Building Standard addresses how buildings support the health and wellbeing of the people who use them. For a university, those people are students, researchers and staff who spend a large part of their day on campus.

Our work translated the project's WELL objectives into documentation for the tender process. Writing these requirements into the tender from the outset means bidders understand what is expected before they commit, rather than meeting new demands later in the process.

This approach supports the integration of health and wellbeing requirements into the campus development as a whole, and gives the university a clear, shared reference for everyone involved.

A short call is usually enough to tell whether the certification target and the engineering can be made to agree from the start. We can talk through where the constraints are likely to sit, what the rating realistically requires of the building, and how the two come together before any drawings are committed.
