Beyond Design Assumptions: Performance and Reliability in Data Centres

A one-hour lecture with the Data Center Association of Serbia on how engineering analysis at design stage protects a data centre's reliability, drawn from our CFD work on the ECMWF data centre in Bologna.

More about the agenda
overview

The engineering decisions taken while a data centre is being designed set its reliability, energy efficiency, resilience and room for future expansion for years to come. Most of the risks that surface in operation can already be found before construction starts, if the design is tested against the conditions it will actually face.

On the ECMWF data centre in Bologna, we used CFD simulation to validate the cooling design in normal operation and with half of the cooling units offline, and to check how roof plant exhaust interacted with the chiller intakes. The results changed the design before anything was built. Our Danilo Franchi, who worked directly on these analyses, walks through the project and what it shows about bringing specialist engineering analysis into the earliest design stages.

Held at Ložionica, Belgrade, in cooperation with the Data Center Association of Serbia, of which Energo is a member.

prerequisites
None. The lecture is open to anyone involved in planning, designing or running data centres.
Investors & asset managers
Those who own or manage property and want to know how certification and regulation affect its value and risk.
Developers & project managers
Running building projects and needing to understand what certification asks in time, cost and decisions.
MEP & building-services engineers
Those who design heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems and need to know what certifications require of them.
Facility & operations managers
Keeping buildings running day to day, with certification, energy use and recertification landing on their desk.
what you'll learn

By the end of the event, you'll know how to

outcome 1
See where design assumptions hide risk
Understand which risks in cooling and airflow only show up when a design is tested against failure scenarios.
outcome 2
Know what CFD analysis can and cannot tell you
Learn how CFD simulation supports decisions on air distribution, rack placement and plant layout during design.
outcome 3
Know when to bring in specialist analysis
See why the largest gains in reliability and cost come from analysis done before the design is fixed.

What the program looks like

Lecture

Duration: 45 minutes

  • Why design-stage decisions decide a data centre's long-term performance
  • The ECMWF data centre in Bologna: a self-contained facility inside a protected industrial building
  • CFD scenarios in normal operation and with half the cooling units offline
  • Roof plant: generator exhaust and chiller intakes
  • What changed in the design, and why it changed before construction
